Becoming A Church Musician

When you know you are called, but you feel unqualified: This blog is here to help you

About Me

I am a stay-at-home mom of four wonderful children.  My husband and I have been married for 13 years and, and we are members of a wonderful church.

My journey in music started when I was 5 years old.  I vividly remember my genius Aunt D. teaching me the piano from a red beginner book at my grandmother’s house.  She taught me for 2 years and then I went to a music school and learned there for two years.  I soon became bored with piano lessons; actually I hated them!  (even though theory day was fun!)I had to find a way for my grandmother to let me quit, so I begged to join the band in school.  You see, my grandmother’s dad was a musical genius.  He could play anything, and I do mean anything from the hardest classical pieces to ragtime etc. You name it; He could play it.  The twist was he could not read music! He only had to hear a song one time and he could play it back for you! Amazing right? Well my grandmother was convinced that at least some of her children and grandchildren were gifted musically, so she bought every household a piano. Then enrolled each grandchild in piano lessons.  I am not kidding. She was serious about this.  I lived with her so I had no choice but to continue in music one way or the other.  She did let me quit to play the trumpet.  I was a very good trumpet player in school.  I was first chair, won district, regional, and state medals.  Iwas also a part of the jazz band and sang in the choir where I also won additional awards.  My grandmother was happy, and I was too….. or so I thought.

Fast forward to today, and I have lamented the decision to quit piano!

I now wish I had stuck with it, and really learned. Now I am learning, but I am older and it is harder. Yet it is not impossible! We can grow together on this journey!
