Play To Worship HIm
Who are we playing for? I think this is a question that we must ask ourselves daily just as we ask whose are we. We as Christians believe that we belong to God because we have been bought with at price we are not our own. It stands to reason then that just as God has given us these gifts that He intends to get the Glory. We play to worship Him! If we are honest, we will see that pride that tries to rear its ugly head and make us play to impress someone at times. This is a very real struggle, but God gives us the grace to get our hearts and minds on Him. To look to Him as our source and supply. He is the one and only one that we should be concerned about. He knows that we are frail and that is why He sent us Jesus. If we trust Him and what He did for us on the cross, then we are well able to continue in humility and pureness of heart toward Him. Pray for humility and pureness of heart everyday and watch and see your worship begin to go to another level.
So as we learn and grow in the technical aspects of music and harmony let us not forget to learn and grow in the spiritual aspects of the Word and prayer.
Being Part of A Team
Often times I am awed by groups that sound so together and in sinc with one another. I have often wondered just how they achieve that oneness, and I found that often times they have played long enough with each other that they instinctively know where the other is going. They are able to just flow with the spirit and play things they did not practice. How do they do this?
I believe they have such a command of their instruments that when they are in tune with the Holy Spirit they are free to really worship. I have experienced it singing on the praise and worship team. The Holy Spirit moved and we were able to just worship. It was so sweet and just plain awe inspiring. Now we did not make that happen; God did it. We just were able to flow and not hinder the spirit because no one was” thinking” about how to worship; we were free to worship.
This is why it is important to practice and learn all we can about our instruments, chords, progressions, scales etc. These things will flow out of us when needed if we have put the time in to study and learn. God always blesses self-determination that is in line with His will! Notice I said in “His” will! We can not do this from the mindset of impressing anyone. Not even ourselves. We must Play to Worship Him alone!
Pray about this today, and let God take your playing to another level.
When Neccessity Has Been Laid At Your Feet
Choosing to serve God means putting your entire life in His hands. That means the things that you get your direction from Him. He decides what you do with the life He gave you. I found myself in a church that was small and had beginning musicians just beginning to play for praise and worship. I was asked to join as a singer, and I prayed about it and joined. I sang with them and began teaching parts and also some vocal technique. Then I found that I needed to know more, and there was an urging in my spirit to learn to play the piano. Little did I know that I was going to actually become a musician! My intent was to learn enough to let the musicians know what we needed to hear for the song to sound right. Well, I ended up a musician after about a year of learning. I tell you that God was with me and He helped me to learn so quickly! I used the 300 page course to help me to understand what needed to be played and more importantly why.
I was transformed! I learned so much in a short period of time, and I was able to teach it to others. I encourage you to learn all you can. Don’t be afraid when God directs you to play for your church! Maybe you find yourself faced with the daunting task of learning to play as you are in charge of the choir. Then this course along with some prayer will help you to succeed!!!
